Hyvät Pakkalan suvun jäsenet,
Joulu on taas ovella – aika hiljentyä, katsoa taaksepäin kulunutta vuotta ja etsiä valoa pimeään aikaan. Tänä vuonna haluan muistuttaa meitä kaikkia siitä, kuinka voimakkaita sukujuuremme ovat ja miten ne kantavat meitä läpi niin arjen kuin suurten hetkienkin.
Yksi suvun tarinoista vie meidät syksyyn 1941, jolloin isoäitini Maija Liisa Heiska (os. Pakkala) lähti lottana kohti tuntematonta ja haastavaa tehtävää. Hän oli tuolloin vasta 16-vuotias, nuorin piiristä lähetetty lotta, matkalla junassa pohjoiseen komppanian mukana. Matka oli pitkä ja vaativa, mutta itsessään täynnä hetkiä, jotka kuvaavat hyvin sitä sisua ja yhteishenkeä, jota suvussamme on aina ollut.
Joulun aika 1941 jäi isoäidilläni erityisesti mieleen, kun taistelujen keskellä eräänä jouluna joulu kellojen soitto kuului hiljalleen kylään helmeilevässä pakkasyössä. Isoäitini muisteli myöhemmin, miten tämä pieni hetki – joulukellojen soitto, tähtien kirkkaus ja hiljaisuus ympärillä – toi lohtua ja toivoa kovien aikojen keskelle. Se oli hetki, joka yhteen kietoi rakkautta, uskoa ja rauhaa, vaikka olosuhteet olivat kaikkea muuta kuin rauhalliset.
Näin joulun aikaan meillä on tapa pysähtyä ja muistella. Suvun tarinat, kuten tämä isoäitini tarina, kantavat meille viestin siitä, että vaikka elämä joskus haastaa, yhteys toisiimme ja perinteisiimme antaa voimaa ja lohtua. Ne muistuttavat meitä siitä, että suku ei ole vain nimi tai sukupuu, vaan elävä yhteisö – jokaisen sukulaisen tarina tukee koko yhteyttä.
Kulunut vuosi on ollut monin tavoin merkityksellinen. Maailman tapahtumat ovat koskettaneet meitä kaikkia ja muistuttaneet siitä, kuinka tärkeää on vaalia rauhaa, huolenpitoa ja yhteenkuuluvuutta. Sukumme perinteet, vahvat juuret ja keskinäinen tuki antavat meille mahdollisuuden kohdata tulevaisuus yhdessä.

Kiitos tarinoistanne, valokuvistanne ja siitä yhteisestä hengestä, jota sukuseuramme elämästä saamme. Pidetään huolta toisistamme ja jatketaan sukumme kertomusten jakamista – niin nuorille polville kuin tulevillekin sukupolville.

Dear Members of the Pakkala Family,
Christmas is once again upon us — a time to pause, look back on the past year, and seek light in the darkest season. This year, I would like to remind us all of the strength of our family roots and how they carry us through everyday life as well as through life’s significant moments.
One of our family stories takes us back to the autumn of 1941, when my grandmother, Maija Liisa Heiska (née Pakkala), set out as a Lotta Svärd volunteer toward an unknown and demanding assignment. She was only 16 years old, the youngest Lotta sent from her district, traveling north by train with her unit. The journey was long and challenging, yet filled with moments that reflect the resilience and strong sense of community that have always been part of our family.
The Christmas season of 1941 remained especially vivid in my grandmother’s memory. In the midst of fighting, one Christmas the sound of church bells could be heard softly drifting through the village on a shimmering, frost-filled night. She later recalled how this small moment — the ringing bells, the brightness of the stars, and the surrounding silence — brought comfort and hope in the middle of difficult times. It was a moment that wove together love, faith, and peace, even though the circumstances were anything but peaceful.
At Christmas time, we have a tradition of pausing to remember. Family stories such as the one my grandmother shared carry an important message: even when life presents challenges, our connection to one another and to our traditions gives us strength and comfort. They remind us that a family is not merely a name or a family tree, but a living community — where each relative’s story supports the whole.
The past year has been meaningful in many ways. Events around the world have touched us all and reminded us how important it is to cherish peace, care, and togetherness. Our family traditions, strong roots, and mutual support give us the ability to face the future together.
